Recently, there has been controversy at Smith College discussing the use of hate-language and it’s affect on suppressing individuals. Wendy Kaminer was part of a panel, a member from “FIRE” which was put together by Smith advisers to discuss free speech on campuses. During the panel she used the word “nigger” and was quickly accused of making “an explicit act of racial violence.” Kaminer defended herself by saying that she was simply talking ABOUT the “n-word” and was not using it in an offensive way. This brought up the argument of whether or not offensive words have there place and time. Defenders of the argument claim that hypersensitivity has resulted in some to completely oppose freedom of speech, saying there is no line between freedom of speech, a right given by the first amendment, and hate speech.
